THE MOST SECURE PLACE IN THE WORLD

Galatians 5:16-26 [LEB]

16 But I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh, for these are in opposition to one another, so that whatever you want, you may not do these things. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are sexual immorality, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, things which I am telling you in advance, just as I said before, that the ones who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Now those ⌊ who belong to Christ ⌋ have crucified the flesh together with its feelings and its desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit. 26 We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Memory Verse:

Galatians 5:16 [LEB], 16 But I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never carry out the desire of the flesh.

Acts 16:6-10 6

And they traveled through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in Asia. 7 And when they* came to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them. 8 So going through Mysia, they went down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul during the night: a certain Macedonian man was standing there and imploring him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and* help us!” 10 And when he had seen the vision, we wanted at once to go away to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

Acts 8:26-30 26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Get up and go toward the south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.) 27 And he got up and* went, and behold, there was a man, an Ethiopian eunuch (a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasury) who had come to worship in Jerusalem 28 and was returning and sitting in his chariot, and reading aloud the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Approach and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran up to it* and* heard him reading aloud Isaiah the prophet and said, “So then, do you understand what you are reading?”

I. THE HOLY SPIRIT CAUSES A CHRISTIAN TO OPPOSE CARNAL AND SINFUL DESIRES.

Galatians 5:16, 17

16.But I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never carry out the desire of the flesh.

17 For the flesh [sinful carnal desires] desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh, for these are in opposition to one another,

Romans 8:5-9 [NCV] 5 Those who live following their sinful selves think only about things that their sinful selves want. But those who (3) live following the Spirit are thinking about the things the Spirit wants them to do. 6 If people’s thinking is controlled by the sinful self, there is death. But if their thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace. 7 When people’s thinking is controlled by the sinful self, they are against God, because (2) they refuse to obey God’s law and really are not even able to obey God’s law. 8 Those people who are ruled by their sinful selves cannot please God.

9 But you are not ruled by your sinful selves. (1) You are ruled by the Spirit, if that Spirit of God really lives in you. But the person who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ.

Living by the Spirit means...

1. Trust and confess Christ as Savior and Lord to receive the Holy Spirit.

John 14:23 [LEB] 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and WE will come to him and will take up residence with him.

2. Study GOD’s Word to know what is morally right and wrong.

Rom. 8:7; 6 For the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mindset of the flesh is enmity toward God, for it is not subjected to the law of God, for it is not able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God.

John 14:24 24 The one who does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

3. Daily surrender your will and life to the Spirit’s control.

John 14:23-26 [LEB] 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and ⌊ will take up residence with him ⌋ . 24 The one who does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me. 25 These things I have spoken to you while* residing with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name—that ONE will teach you all things, and will remind you of everything that I said to you.

Galatians 5:17b

so that whatever you want [meaning - what your fleshly desires want], you may not do these things.

Galatians 5:18

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

John 6:28, 29 [ESV]

28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him

whom he has sent.

John 6:38-40 [ESV]

38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is

the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him

should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
